If you love German chocolate cake you will love this too. It is delicious.
I made this recipe for my mom for her birthday. I wanted to change things up from her usual favorite, German chocolate cake. It was the biggest hit ever! She loved it so much she shared with her coworkers. The next weekend, I made several more pies and gave out the recipe. I personally dont like it BECAUSE I dont like nuts or coconut. The recipe is a little on the difficult side for people like me who struggle to make a boxed cake mix. People who hands on understand hard ball and soft ball candy terms, this should be a breeze. Apparently, I figured it out and did a good job.
YUMMY!! German Chocolate s my favorite cake, so now this is my favorite pie!! I used my oldie but goodie pie crust, which also uses lard, as well as a little baking powder and an egg. If you can't find the lard at your store, ask someone. I went back to using it, after commercial shortenings changed their recipes, several years ago and so happy I did!
This is just about the best pie ever! It's verry rich and you need to check the calories per piece before digging in. The filling is very smooth and the topping is just perfect. It doesn't get any better!
I attempted to make this pie, following the recipe. I had issues with the local stores for not having the German Sweet Chocolate. So I used the Semi-Sweet instead. I also added 1/2 tablespoon of granulated white sugar for every ounce of Semi-Sweet Chocolate that I used. I also used Pure Madagascar Vanilla. I must say, this is one of the best pies I have ever made.
this is so rich but worth the trouble of making.
It was heavenly !!!!
I made this pie a few days ago for my son in law as a gift for his birthday. He could not eat it because it tasted like bourbon which was not in the pie at all. I my self had tasted the individual components and they were very tasty by them selves. so i took the pie back and ate some of it. I discovered to my surprise what it did mimic a bourbon taste, the why however was because there was an abundance of pecans. the 1 cup is way too much and the unsweetened chocolate with the pecans mocked and after taste to bourbon. My personal opinion is this use only a 1/2 cup of pecans in the chocolate mixture and use 6 oz of German chocolate instead of 4 oz and 2 oz of unsweetened. I think this would make a much better pie.Jan

I was interested in baking this pie until I saw it contains 801 calories a serving! I printed it anyway and will try to pare down calories without compromising flavor. 801 calories represent 40% of a day's intake.
